3 Common Beach Photography Mistakes – And How to Turn Them Into Total Wins!

Real talk: there’s nothing quite like a beach photoshoot. The golden light!!? The salty air!!? That magical backdrop?!

But let’s be honest if you’ve actually shot on the beach, you know it’s not always  sunshine and giggles! Hahaha. Between blinding light, wild wind, tangled hair, and weather that changes its mind every five minutes…yeah, beach sessions are hard!!

But here’s the thing: you’re not alone!!! I’ve been there too! After photographing hundreds of beach sessions over the past 10+ years, I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way 🙃) that amazing beach photos come down to way more than just camera settings….

In fact, the biggest mistakes I see photographers make isn’t even about gear or light…It’s all about how we prep and lead our people!

So if you’re ready for AMAZING beach sessions that leave your clients OBSESSED with their photos (and you!) keep reading. These simple tricks will totally change the game!

MISTAKE #1: Not Prepping Your Clients Ahead of Time

This one? Major game-changer!!  One of the biggest mistakes is assuming clients just know how beach sessions work.

Spoiler alert: they don’t! 😅 Most have never done this before, and beach sessions are a whole different world. They probably have never ever done this before.

Think about it…wind, bright sun, soft (and hot!!) sand, unpredictable weather…There’s a lot going on out there. If they show up feeling flustered or confused, it’s not on them, it’s on us. And it’s gonna make your job so much harder.

The fix? Educate them ahead of time! A client who knows what to expect = a confident, happy client

Here’s what I walk them through:

  • What to wear (and what colors actually pop on the beach!)
  • How to prep the kids (yep, snacks and wipes are must-haves!)
  • Why showing up early for golden hour is everything
  • What kind of weather still works (cloudy skies = soft light magic ✨)

This tiny bit of prep? It makes a huge difference. Your clients will feel relaxed and ready, and you’ll capture those natural, joyful moments with way less stress.

Prepared session vs. Unprepared session? Not even close.

When your clients know what to expect, everything runs smoothly especially when it comes to style. A quick tip I always share: what they wear matters more than they think. If your brand is light and airy (like mine), bold patterns or neon colors can totally throw off the look and feel. Most people have no idea that their outfit choice can make or break the style you’re known for, so it’s up to you to guide them. Show examples from past sessions, share your favorite tones (think soft neutrals, creams, blues, and dusty pinks), and explain how those choices help create the dreamy, natural vibe they see in your work. A little heads-up here saves so much guesswork later.

MISTAKE #2: Skipping the Connection

Let’s be real – your energy sets the tone!

If you show up feeling rushed or robotic, your clients will feel like they’re just another name on your calendar. And trust me, that shows big time in their photos: stiff poses, awkward smiles, hands that don’t know what to do…

But when you show up like you’re genuinely excited to be there? That’s when the magic happens. ✨

Connection builds confidence!!! Your clients want to feel seen, celebrated, and supported, not just posed. Boring!

Here’s what I do every single session:

  • Greet them like I’m so pumped to be there (because I am!!)
  • Talk them through everything with encouragement like “YESSS, that’s it!!”
  • Show them what I want (instead of barking orders)
  • Constant reminders that they’re crushing it, even if they feel awkward

You don’t have to be loud or over-the-top (but you can be!) you just have to be warm, human, and present. When your clients feel like they’re in good hands, they’ll loosen up and shine. And that’s when the photos come alive.

MISTAKE #3: Not Communicating Clearly (Before OR During the Session!)

Picture this: golden hour is slipping away, your client’s texting “We’re lost,” and now you’ve got 10 minutes of light left and everyone’s panicking. 😩 Been there, done that. It’s the worst.

Clear communication can make or break a session. It’s not just about sending a reminder, it’s about guiding your client with confidence from start to finish.

Here’s how I keep things smooth:

  • Drop a pinned location so they’re not wandering around lost
  • Plan to meet 15 minutes early ( just in case, because life!)
  • Send a session-day checklist (water, wipes, hair ties… all the things)
  • Let them know they can text me anytime if they need help

I literally tell them:

“You’re never bothering me, I’m here to make this easy and fun!”

That little reassurance? It takes all the pressure off. And when your clients trust you, everything just flows better. The smiles are real, the moments are joyful, and you get to work your magic without the chaos.

So there you have it! These 3 quick fixes can totally transform your beach sessions, from stressy and awkward to smooth and stunning. 💛
