Feature Image Suggestion:
If you’ve ever had a client ask, “What do I do with my hands?!” you’re definitely not alone! The open space, ocean breeze, and all those natural distractions at the beach can make posing feel awkward real quick. Especially for people who aren’t used to being in front of the camera.
But here’s the good news. The best beach portraits don’t look posed at all. They’re full of movement, emotion, connection, and that carefree joy that just hits different when you’re near the ocean.
Want to help your clients look amazing and feel confident!!!? Let’s dive into my five favorite posing secrets to create natural, candid beach portraits your clients will LOVE
Why It Works
Let’s be honest…….Even when you start with those safe, ‘fireplace’ shots, it doesn’t always work, sometimes people are just uncomfortable. Moving around naturally helps take the pressure off and makes clients forget about the camera. It creates a relaxed, natural vibe and avoids that awkward stillness. Everyone’s nervous, so not jumping into posing right away gives them a chance to ease into it.
It gives you time to check the back of your camera and make sure your settings are on point. And if all else fails and you need a minute to breathe, have your clients walk away, hold hands, and just take a moment… you’ve got this!!
How to Do It
Pro Tip: Don’t over-direct. Simply give a small prompt and let them interact naturally. Show them what to do!! Don’t just tell them, demonstrate it for them!!! Play with them!
Suggested Image: A couple walking along the beach, mid-laughter, with relaxed body language. A child being thrown in the air for a fun, candid moment.
Why It Works
The most emotional, connected portraits usually come from two things: touch and intentional eye direction. Both help your clients feel grounded and give them something natural to do.
How to Do It
For couples, have one gently tuck the other’s hair behind their ear or lean in for a soft forehead touch. Keep those belly buttons close! Too much awkward space can look weird! Ask parents to wrap their arms around their kids’ shoulders, squeeze in tight, or snuggle close. The goal is to make the pose feel real, not forced. Looking at each other and laughing works every time, it keeps things natural and happy!!!
Here are some easy connection cues to guide your clients naturally:

Hold Hands: Simple but effective! Ask your clients to hold hands, whether walking or standing still. This small gesture adds warmth and connection without feeling forced. (Swing back and forth, twirls, keep it playful!)
Gentle Touches: A light hand on the shoulder, waist, or lower back can create a tender moment, especially for couples. It makes the photo feel more intimate and relaxed. (Keep bodies close!! It makes all the difference in the connection!)

Hugs & Snuggles: For families or couples, a casual embrace or snuggling together can add a lot of emotion. Have them wrap their arms around each other naturally, or suggest they lean in close to each other.
Forehead Kisses or Nuzzles: For couples, a kiss on the forehead or a nuzzle can create a sweet, intimate moment. This brings out warmth and affection in your shots. (But remember, when the guy is nuzzling into the woman, have him close his eyes! You don’t want any crazy expressions ruining the moment!!)

Playful Touches: For something lighthearted, have them touch in a playful way, like one person tapping the other’s nose or a gentle hand on the cheek. It creates an authentic, joyful connection. (Throw the kids in the air, tickle each other, grab their cheeks, and give a big kiss!! The real laughs make the best photos!)
Pro Tip: Tell them to hold each other like they mean it, that tiny shift changes everything. The closer they are, the better the connection feels in the image!!
Why It Works
The ocean breeze adds natural movement to hair and clothing, making your photos feel alive. Instead of fighting the wind, embrace it! It adds a dreamy, editorial feel that totally fits the beach vibe.
And let’s be honest, nothing says “beach” more than wavy beach hair! The little flyaways, the movement in a dress, the natural flow, it’s all part of the story you’re telling.
How to Do It
Pro Tip: A little wind is magical. But if it’s too strong, suggest a half-up hairstyle to keep things manageable. Also, look for natural wind blocks, like dunes, fences, buildings, or piers. Sometimes just shifting your angle a bit makes a huge difference!

Why It Works
The best portraits happen when people feel comfortable, confident, and cared for. When someone feels seen and supported, it shows in their eyes, their body language, and those subtle little expressions that turn a photo from good to WOW.
So keep reminding them how amazing they’re doing!! Hype them up throughout the session. Never let an awkward silence creep in, you set the vibe! If you’re having fun, they’ll loosen up and have fun too.
And remember… people won’t just remember the photos, they’ll remember how you made them feel. Let them be themselves! If they don’t want to smile from ear to ear, don’t make them!! If they don’t want to smile with their teeth, that’s totally OK! When your clients feel good, respected, and comfortable, they will love their experience even more.
How to Do It
Pro Tip: Don’t say “Smile.” Instead, say something like,“Tell me something hilarious about your partner,” or
“What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?”
That real reaction is where the magic happens.

If you don’t educate your clients before the session, they’re going to start second-guessing everything.
“Did I wear the right outfit?”
“Why does this color look weird on the beach?”
“Is my shirt too tight in the wind?”
You can save them from that spiral before it even starts, just by giving them some simple prep tips ahead of time. Let them know what works best on the beach (like ditching the high heels), what colors photograph beautifully, and what to expect if it’s windy. When they feel prepared, they’ll show up relaxed, confident, and ready to have fun, and you’ll get better photos because of it!
“Want to look totally relaxed and natural in your photos? Don’t even worry about posing, just act like I’m not even there! Have a real conversation, laugh, or tell each other an embarrassing story. I always educate my clients beforehand so they know exactly what to expect, and when they’re prepared, they can just focus on having fun. The best moments happen when you’re not thinking about the camera at all!”
The more confident and comfortable they feel before the shoot starts, the more fun the session will be for everyone.
